In the original Home Alone, Kevin's home life is not great. Across various scenes, we see Max acting like a cheeky jerk to Pam and Jeff at their open house, and later on, trying to get his hands on some items at the church reserved for children in need. Even more importantly, the villains are presented as quasi-protagonists with their own elaborate backstory which demands the audience's sympathy.Īfter being introduced to the "villains" of the story, who are really just a down-on-their-luck couple desperately trying to keep their family off the streets during the holidays, we get a look at Max, the lead character of the movie, and the one you are supposed to get behind. In this movie, the main child character Max is hard to root for. Unfortunately, Home Sweet Home Alone makes the puzzling decision to remove that black-and-white morality for something much more confusing. They are depicted as selfish and greedy, and willing to hurt innocent children like Kevin to get what they want, which makes it all the more enjoyable when they get their comeuppance at the hands of the heroes of the franchise. On the other hand, the home intruders were common criminals who were very obviously not good people. The kind of person you want to see conquer his obstacles. Kevin was a somewhat neglected and bullied child who was sweet, helpful, and brave. The original Home Alone and most of its sequels knew the movies were aimed at a young audience, and the makers were careful to keep the plot simple enough, so kids could easily follow the motivations of the main characters.
